Students wishing to appear for the IMO exam should be familiar with similar eligibility criteria. The International Mathematics Olympiad is a Mathematics competition held annually by the Science Olympiad Foundation for school students. It should be noted that the eligibility criteria for IMO testing are limited and remain the same over the past few years. Before starting with preparing for the IMO exam, students should be aware of the full process of qualifying for the IMO exam in order to understand their eligibility.

Let us first understand what is the IMO exam. 

The IMO exam is an annual Olympiad Maths test designed for Grade 1 to 12 students by the Science Olympiad Foundation. The full IMO examination form represents the International Mathematics Olympiad examination. The IMO exam aims to identify and motivate potential students to become future scientists or professionals. IMO exams help those talented students compete with other students around the world. It enables learners to judge their skills in Mathematics. IMO results provide a summary for students on their academic growth. Test pattern:

For Classes 1st to 4th grade: 

    •    The total number of questions asked in the IMO test paper is 35.

    •    IMO test time to test 35 questions 60 minutes.

    •    IMO Test Questionnaire for Classes 1 to 4 Completes 4 Phases

    •    Section 1 – Reasonable thinking consists of 10 questions

    •    Section 2 – Reasoning related to maths consists of 10 questions

    •    Section 3 – Daily Mathematics consists of 10 questions

    •    Category winners (5 questions)

For classes 5th to 12th grade: 

    •    Students registering for the exams must try 50 questions.

    •    IMO test time to try 50 questions in 60 minutes

    •    IMO Test Questionnaire for Classes 5 to 12 Completes 4 Phases.

    •    Section 1 – Reasonable Thinking consists of  15 questions

    •    Section 2 – Reasoning related to maths consists of 20 questions

    •    Section 3 – Daily Mathematics consists of 10 questions

    •    Category 4 – Graduation category consists of 5 questions

The IMO Class 9 Eligibility Criteria 2021-22

Students from SOF schools can apply for an IMO. Schools must select any test day and register 30 days before the test date. Interested students can register for SOF IMO exams at their schools. Individual enrollment is accepted if schools are unable to participate in the IMO examination. There are many IMO Class 9 2011 Question Paper that can help students to prepare for the exam. The minimum number of 10 students required to enrol in each school is mandatory for SOF IMO testing.

  • Students in grades 1 to 12 who want to test their performance in Mathematics are eligible for a Level 1 IMO paper.
  • IMO testing is done on two levels – Level 1 and 2
  • Students with low performance at level 1 are eligible for level 2 IMO examinations.

Qualifications Requirements for the Level 1 IMO Exam

All students in grades 1 to 12 are eligible for the Level 1 IMO exam regardless of how they are doing in their studies. The mid-level qualification approach to the IMO level 1 examination paper helps to increase the level of student participation worldwide. Class 1 to 12 students pursuing education within or outside the country may apply for the IMO level 1 examination freely.

Qualifications Requirements for the Level 2 IMO Test

    •    IMO Level 2 tests are designed for students from grades 3 to 12. Students in these classes who pass the minimum performance standard on the Level 1 IMO paper are also screened for the Level 2 examination. 

    •    Eligibility criteria for students who may apply for a Level 2 IMO exam paper consists of the following steps. 

    •    Top 5 students qualify for Level 2 examinations at the international level.

    •    The top 25 students in each class and area are eligible for the Level 2 IMO exam.

    •    Senior management managers for each category also qualify for the Level 2 IMO examination.

    •    Position holders for each participating school, were at least 10 students in the class have tried and tested and obtained a 50% pass rate.

    •    Grade 1 and Grade 2 learners are not required to pass the Level 2 examination as their performance will be judged based on the Level 1 examination.

This eligibility criteria that is mentioned above is not only for class 9 but also for all the classes from 1st to 12th. 

The IMO Test Application Process

    1.    Interested students can obtain their IMO exam registration forms at their schools. Students can apply for a school registration form by following the steps below.

    2.    Schools registered with SOF will receive a prospectus that includes registration forms.

    3.    Schools must first register with the SOF. Students can get their enrollment in different schools.

    4.    If a school is not registered with the SOF, it may still be able to find a candidate by contacting the SOF.

    5.    Schools can contact the SOF by phone (0124-4951200) or email.

    6.    Interested parties can complete the forms with all the relevant details and submit the forms to their schools.

    7.    The school must complete the SOF-registered forms before the due date.

Exam strategies

The IMO level problems are conceptual, which means that they do not need direct knowledge of the ideas, but rather an understanding of how they are used. You should also be familiar with the application of the ideas, which you may do by reviewing the “Achiever’s Section,” which has questions based on an advanced level application of principles.
